What is Reflexology?

by Daniele Petton, NCMT

Although people talk about foot massage, they often mean foot reflexology.

Based on an ancient Chinese therapy, reflexology involves manipulation of specific reflex points on the foot (also on hands and ears) that correspond to all glands, organs and parts of the body. This bodywork involves application of pressure with thumb, finger and hand to these reflex points to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion.

Similar to acupressure principles, reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. If this energy becomes blocked, the part of the body relating to this blockage is affected. By using specific pressures techniques, these blockages can be detected through the experience of pain, or through the presence of “gritty areas” often referred to as crystal deposits. The pressure and massage techniques taught in reflexology are designed to dissipate energy blocks and break down crystalline structure.

Through stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, and by encouraging the release of toxins, reflexology promotes the body to heal itself. It is especially useful in stress-related illness and emotional disorders. Reflexology therapy is ideal to combat everyday health problems and to create a deep state of relaxation.

Who can benefit from reflexology?
People of any age can derive positive benefits. However, you should consult your GP if you are in the first quarter of pregnancy, diabetic or if you suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

For you and your family!
Once you discover the power of reflexology as a relaxation technique and healing therapy, you will want to find out more. You can also learn to work on your own reflexes, thus providing you with an excellent self-care tool. At home, reflexology could become part of your daily care for your family, as a privileged moment of relaxation and exchange.
